# Employees

Employment types, employee statuses and asset categories: the three lists every employee record is built from.

Three tabs, three lists, all of them feeding the employee form. Fill them in before you add people and you will not be editing records later to correct a category that did not exist yet.

![The tab strip on the Employees settings screen, reading Employment Types, Employee Statuses and Asset Categories. Employment Types is selected and underlined in blue.](https://www.sorviai.com/help/worklink/settings/employees-tabs.png)

*Three tabs, in the order you would fill them.*

## Employment Types

![The Employment Types tab, headed Employment Types above the line Configure the employment categories available when adding employees, with a blue Type button at the right. Five rows follow, each with a coloured dot, a name, a code chip and a headcount: Permanent PERM 27 employees, Fixed-Term Contract FTC 1 employee, Apprentice APPR 1 employee, Agency Temp TEMP, and Part-Time PT 1 employee. Each row ends in a three-dot menu.](https://www.sorviai.com/help/worklink/settings/employment-types.png)

*The headcount on each row is the number to check before retiring a type.*

The categories offered when adding somebody. Each carries a **Name**, a **Code** and a colour, and the code is what the rest of Worklink matches on, so keep it short and stable. Types that arrived with the tenant are badged **System**.

## Employee Statuses

![The Employee Statuses tab, headed Employee Statuses above the line The lifecycle types are fixed. Add and manage statuses under each type; the starred default is applied automatically. An Active group, described as employees currently working, carries a Status button and two rows: Confirmed with amber Default and Locked badges and 25 employees, and Probation with a Locked badge, 1 employee and a Set default action. A Training group holds Apprenticeship, also Default and Locked, and an Offboarding group follows.](https://www.sorviai.com/help/worklink/settings/employee-statuses.png)

*Statuses sit under fixed lifecycle types. You add statuses, not lifecycles.*

Something like **Serving Notice** is a status, not a lifecycle of its own. Each group carries its own add button, and any status that is not currently the default offers **Set default**.

- **Default** (the starred one): Applied automatically to a new employee under that lifecycle type. Exactly one status per type carries it.
- **Locked** (seeded): A status Worklink relies on. It can be seen and used but not edited or deleted.
- **Inactive** (retired): Kept for the records that already hold it, but no longer offered on the form.

## Asset Categories

![The Asset Categories tab, headed Asset Categories above the line Categories used when assigning company assets (laptop, phone, monitor, etc.) to employees, with a blue Category button at the right. Rows list the categories in use, each with a coloured dot, a name and a three-dot menu.](https://www.sorviai.com/help/worklink/settings/asset-categories.png)

*A category is a name and a colour, and the colour is what makes an assets list scannable.*

Assigning the equipment itself is not done here. That happens on the employee record, or in bulk from the employee list.

> **Tip:**
>
> **Deactivate rather than delete**
>
> All three lists offer both. Deleting removes an option that historic records may still refer to; deactivating keeps the history and simply stops offering it on new forms. Reach for delete only for something created by mistake and never used.

> **Note:**
>
> **The headcounts are the safety check**
>
> Each row shows how many employees hold it. A type or status with people on it is one to change carefully, and the count is there so you learn that before the change rather than after.
