# Add a Department

Create a department, give it a head, and set up the teams inside it.

Only the name is required, but the head is the field that matters most, because approvals route through it.

- Select **Add Department** on the Departments screen.

![The Add Department form, with the breadcrumb Worklink, Departments, Create Department. A Department Details section holds Department Name marked required with the placeholder e.g. Engineering, Department Code with the placeholder e.g. ENG, Mail Alias with the placeholder e.g. engineering@company.com, and a Department Head dropdown. A Sub-departments section below carries an Add Sub-Department button. Cancel and Save buttons sit at the foot.](https://www.sorviai.com/help/worklink/departments/department-create.png)
- Enter the **Department Name**. It is the only required field.
- Add a **Department Code**, a short form such as ENG. It is what appears where the full name will not fit.
- Choose the **Department Head** from the list of employees. Leave approvals for this department route to whoever you pick.
- Add sub-departments with **Add Sub-Department** if the team divides further, then **Save**.

## The fields

*The Add Department form*

> **Tip:**
>
> **Set the head before adding people**
>
> Assigning a department head afterwards works, but requests raised in the meantime will have routed on whatever the reporting line said at the time. Setting it first avoids reassigning them.

> **Note:**
>
> **Sub-departments can wait**
>
> They can be added later by editing the department, and a flat department is perfectly valid: five of Ironvale's eight have none. Add them when a team is actually large enough to need dividing.
