# How long Trash keeps things

Deleted items are removed for good after a number of days your administrator sets. Here's how the time limit works.

Trash has a time limit set for the whole organisation. Once an item has been in Trash for longer than that, Nest deletes it permanently, without asking anyone.

![The Trash page of Nest's settings, headed Trash, with the line Configure how long trashed files and folders are retained before permanent deletion. Under Retention, the Auto-delete after box reads 60 days, with the note Trashed items will be permanently deleted after this many days. Set to 0 to disable auto-deletion.](https://www.sorviai.com/help/nest/trash/trash-retention.png)

## When the clearing happens

Expired items are cleared the next time anyone in the organisation opens Trash, not at a fixed hour. An item a day past its limit may still appear until then; once cleared, it can't be restored.

> **Note:**
>
> Only an administrator can change the limit, on the **Trash** page of Nest's settings. Shortening it removes anything already older than the new limit the next time Trash is opened.
