# Create a label

Make a new label on the Labels screen, or straight from the label picker while you're tagging a file.

A label is a name and a colour, nothing more. Make one ahead of time on the **Labels** screen, or make it in the middle of tagging a file when you realise the label you want doesn't exist yet.

## On the Labels screen

- Go to **Labels** and select **New Label** at the top right.
- Enter a name, then select one of the eight colours. Blue is chosen unless you pick another.

![The form that opens at the top of the Labels screen: an empty box reading Label name, and beneath it a row of eight round colour swatches in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink and grey, with the blue one ringed to show it is selected.](https://www.sorviai.com/help/nest/labels/new-label-form.png)
- Select **Create** at the right-hand end of the form. The new label joins the list below, with no files yet.

## While labelling a file

- Open the file's menu, select **Label**, then select **Create new label** at the foot of the panel.
- Enter a name, choose a colour and select **Create**.

![The panel headed Labels for Board Pack - Q2 2026.pdf, listing six labels with Board ticked. At its foot a Label name box, the same eight colour swatches with blue ringed, and Cancel and Create buttons.](https://www.sorviai.com/help/nest/labels/picker-create-form.png)
- The new label joins the list already ticked. Select **Save** to put it on the file.

> **Note:**
>
> Each of your labels needs a different name, and capitals don't make two names different: with **Board** already made, **board** is refused with the message that a label with this name already exists. Two colleagues can each have their own **Board**, because labels belong to the person who made them.

> **Tip:**
>
> Colour is the first thing you'll read, before the name. Settle what each colour means early, such as red for urgent, and keep to it.
