# Taxes

The rates every document line can carry, and why Inventory has one tax tab where the finance side has four.

Inventory documents carry tax like any other, so the rates live here. What does not live here is anything about filing a return: that belongs to the app that files it, and Inventory does not offer it.

Go to **Settings > Taxes**. One usable tab, **Tax Rates**. **Construction Industry Scheme** is listed beside it and is not selectable.

![The Tax Rates tab of Taxes in Inventory Settings, headed Tax Rates above the line Manage tax rates applied to your transactions, with a blue Tax button at the right. A greyed-out Construction Industry Scheme tab sits beside it. A table with columns TAX NAME, RATE, STATUS and ACTIONS lists Zero Rate at 0%, Reduced Rate at 5% and Standard Rate at 20%, each marked Active.](https://www.sorviai.com/help/inventory/settings/taxes-rates.png)

*One tab and one greyed-out placeholder: tax registration and filing are not Inventory's job.*

## Tax Rates

The rates a document line can be charged at, each with a name, a percentage and a status. Making a rate **Inactive** keeps it off new documents while leaving it on the documents that already use it, which is what you want when a rate changes rather than disappears.

> **Tip:**
>
> **Mark a rate inactive rather than deleting it**
>
> Deleting is refused where the rate is in use, and the screen offers the inactive route instead. History that cannot explain its own tax is worse than a long list.

> **Note:**
>
> **The rates are shared with the rest of your workspace**
>
> There is one set of tax rates for the organisation, not one per app. A rate you retire here stops being offered everywhere.

## What is deliberately absent

Registration details, the accounting basis, the filing frequency and the return itself are all configured in the app that prepares your return, not here. Inventory charges tax and records it; it does not file it.
