# Notifications

Desktop notifications, the sound they arrive with, and the three kinds of notification you can turn off. These settings are yours alone.

Notifications is the one screen in Inventory settings that changes nothing for anybody else. It is your own preference for how and when the app interrupts you, and a colleague's answer can be different.

Go to **Settings > Notifications**. Two tabs: **General** and **Notification Types**.

## General

**Desktop and Sound** holds two switches.

![The General tab of Notifications in Inventory Settings, headed General above the line Choose how and when you're notified across the app and your desktop. A DESKTOP & SOUND section holds Desktop Notifications turned on, described as Receive browser notifications when you're not looking at this tab, and Notification Sound turned on, described as Play a sound when new notifications arrive. A CHOOSE A SOUND list offers Default (selected), Gentle Chime, Bright Ping and Digital Pulse, each with a play control, above a blue Send Test Notification button.](https://www.sorviai.com/help/inventory/settings/notifications-general.png)

*Each sound has a play control, so you can hear one without waiting for a real notification.*

> **Note:**
>
> **Your browser has the final say on desktop notifications**
>
> Where notifications are blocked for the site, the tab says so and points at the lock icon in your browser's address bar. The switch here cannot override that: you allow the site first, then turn the setting on.

## Notification Types

Three switches, one per kind of notification.

- **Mentions**: When somebody @mentions you in a comment.
- **Workflow Rules**: Notifications raised by the automated workflow rules your organisation has built.
- **System**: System notifications and portal updates.

> **Tip:**
>
> **Turn off the type, not the sound, when there is too much noise**
>
> A sound you have muted still leaves the notification to read later. A type you have turned off is the one that actually stops arriving.
