# Module settings

The Sales, Purchases and Items screens, the tab each document type owns, and the one of them already written up in full.

Three of the four screens under **Modules** configure the documents Inventory buys and sells with, one tab per document type. The fourth, **Inventory**, is stock behaviour and has a page of its own.

Go to **Settings** and look under **Modules**: **Sales**, **Purchases**, **Items** and **Inventory**.

## What a module tab holds

Most tabs carry two things, and some carry only the second.

- **General**: Switches and defaults for that document type, such as the contact type a new customer starts as.
- **Field Customisation**: Custom fields added to that document's form. Several tabs are field customisation and nothing else.

Tabs above read Customers, Sales Orders, Invoices, Customer Payments, Credit Notes and Returns. A General and Field Customisation switcher sits below with General selected. A GENERAL section holds Default customer type with Business selected and Individual beside it, and a switch reading Allow duplicate customer/vendor names.](https://www.sorviai.com/help/inventory/settings/module-settings-customers.png)

*Every module tab takes this shape: a General half of switches and defaults, and a Field Customisation half.*

## Sales

Six tabs: **Customers**, **Sales Orders**, **Invoices**, **Customer Payments**, **Credit Notes** and **Returns**. Quotes are not among them: quoting belongs to the finance side of the workspace, and Inventory does not mount it.

The Customers tab carries the two settings worth knowing about.

## Purchases

**Vendors**, **Expenses**, **Purchase Orders**, **Purchase Receives**, **Bills**, **Vendor Payments** and **Vendor Credits**. Purchase Orders is the tab with real settings on it; the rest are custom fields.

> **Note:**
>
> **Purchase Receives is where the stock decision shows up**
>
> Whether receiving goods moves stock at all is the Stock Update Trigger, on the Inventory screen, not a setting on this tab.
## Items

Two tabs, and they are not the same kind of thing.

- [Item Preferences](https://www.sorviai.com/inventory/help-docs/items/item-preferences): The Items tab in full: what a new item starts out as, the units everything is measured in, and the barcode field.

**Units of Measure** is the second tab, and it is a list rather than a form: the units a quantity can be counted in, each with a name and an abbreviation.

![The Units of Measure tab of Items settings in Inventory Settings, listing the units a quantity can be counted in, each with its name and short abbreviation, alongside a button for adding another unit.](https://www.sorviai.com/help/inventory/settings/items-units.png)

*A unit added here becomes selectable on every item; the default unit for new items is set on the Items tab.*

> **Tip:**
>
> **Add the unit before the item that needs it**
>
> A unit is picked on the item, so one you have not created cannot be chosen. Adding them in a single pass at setup saves interrupting yourself later.

## Inventory

Eight tabs, and the only screen on this rail that decides how stock itself behaves: the axes a variant can vary by, your warehouses, and the trigger that says when a purchase becomes stock. It is long enough to have a page of its own.

- [Inventory settings](https://www.sorviai.com/inventory/help-docs/settings/inventory): Variant options, warehouses, the stock-update trigger, and the five custom-field tabs.
